South Waterside Flooding

South Waterside Drive Rt. 627 where it crosses Fannie’s Creek

This road is the only access to a 200 home community, marina and campground.   Fannie’s Creek It is connected to the Chickahominy River by a culvert under the CSX railroad track and the water level rises and falls with the tides.  The partial flooding at High Tide can be seen in the photograph.

During a storm or hurricane, the flooding can be as much as 4 feet above the road, preventing access to the community by ambulances, fire engines and other emergency vehicles as well as homeowners.

According to long term residents, the roadway has been sinking making the flooding more severe over time.  This undermining of the road is evidenced by the lower levels of the road on either side of the creek culvert.

VDOT is familiar with the problem, but estimates for repair have been far more than the funds available.
