March 20, 2014 New Kent Republican Mass Meeting
6:30 pm in the Board Room of the New Kent County Administration Building at New Kent Courthouse.  The meeting is for the New Kent Republican Chairman,  members of the County Committee, and delegates to the 7th District Convention on on May 10 and to the Virginia State Convention on June 7.  Preregistration is required for all candidates. OFFICIAL CALL

Mass Meeting of New Kent Republican Committee

Of the Republican Party of Virginia

As acting  Chairman of the New Kent County Committee of the Republican Party of Virginia, and pursuant to the Plan of Organization and as recommended and directed by the Committee, I, Wayne Hayden, do hereby issue this call for a Mass Meeting to be held in the Board Room of the Administration Building in the county complex at 12007 Court House Circle, New Kent, Virginia 23124, or an alternate site, starting at 6:30 PM local time on March 20, 2014 for the following purposes:

1.      Electing a Chairman for the New Kent  County Republican Committee

2.      Electing the members of the New Kent County Republican Committee 

3.     Electing up to two hundred twenty (220) Delegates and an equal number of Alternates to the Republican Party of Virginia State Convention to be held on Saturday, June 7, 2014 at the Roanoke Civic Center, 710 Williamson Road, Roanoke, Virginia 24016 or its alternate site, beginning at 10:00 a.m. local time for the following purposes:  

a)     Nominating a Republican candidate for the United States Senate

b)     And for the transaction of such other business as may properly come before the convention 

4.     Electing up to two hundred twenty  (220) Delegates and an equal number of Alternates to the Republican Party of Virginia 7th Congressional District Convention to be held on Saturday May 10, 2014, in the auditorium of Deep Run High School, 4801 Twin Hickory Rd. Glen Allen, VA 23059 (Henrico County) or an alternate site if necessary, beginning at  10:00 a.m. local time for the following purposes:  

a)      Electing a Chairman of the 7th Congressional District Republican Committee 

For the State and District Conventions, each unit is entitled to one (1) Delegate Vote per 250 Republican votes cast or major portion thereof for the Republican candidate in the most recent elections for President and Governor, so that the New Kent County Republican Party is entitled to forty six (46) Delegate Votes at the State Convention and forty four (44 ) at the 7th District Convention. 

Qualifications for Participation

All legal and qualified voters of New Kent County,  under the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia, regardless of race, religion, national origin or sex, who are in accord with the principles of the Republican Party and who, if requested, express in open meeting either orally or in writing as may be required, their intent to support all of its nominees for public office in the ensuing election, may participate as members of the Republican Party of Virginia in its mass meetings, party canvasses, conventions or primaries encompassing their respective election districts. In addition to the foregoing, to be in accord with the principles of the Republican Party, a person otherwise qualified hereunder shall not have participated in Virginia in the nomination process of a party other than the Republican Party in the last five years. A single exception to the above shall be approved for a voter that renounces affiliation with any other party in writing, and who expresses in writing that he/she is in accord with the principles of the Republican Party and intends, at the time of the writing, to support the nominees of the Republican Party in the future.  A voter that utilizes the foregoing exception, and thereafter participates in the nomination process of a Party other than the Republican Party, shall not have the benefit of the exception as identified in this paragraph thereafter.

In order to be eligible for election as a Delegate or Alternate Delegate to any convention, an individual must be registered to vote no later than the pre-filing deadline established by the Official Committee or, if pre-filing is not a requirement, no later than the date of election as a Delegate. A person who has made application for registration and meets all other requirements herein, but whose name does not appear on the local registration books solely because of the books having been closed in connection with a local election, will nevertheless be deemed a legal and qualified voter. 

Filing Requirements  

Candidates for election to the position of Chairman of the New Kent Republican Committee must by in good standing with the committee and  shall file a written statement of intent to the Committee Chair, Wayne Hayden, stating their intention to seek election as Chair by 5:00 PM, EST, February 10, 2014. 

Candidates for election to the New Kent Republican Committee, Delegate to the 7th District Convention, and/or State Convention shall submit a New Kent Republican Committee filing form stating their intent to the Committee Chair, Mr. Wayne Hayden, stating their intention to seek election for each specific event.  All statements  must be Received no later than 5:00 PM EST, March 17, 2014 either in person to Mr. Hayden or by mail at the following address:

Registration and Fees

The doors will open at 6:30 with registration to begin at the same time.  Any participant in line at 7:00 p.m. shall be allowed to register for the mass meeting. There will be no registration fee to participate in this mass meeting. There is a voluntary registration fee of $35 to participate in the Republican State Convention and a $25.00 voluntary  registration fee to participate in the 7th District Convention.

VIRGINIA DOES NOT HAVE EARLY VOTING.

But you can vote absentee if you meet the qualifications on the absentee application.  You can go down to the NKC Registrar's Office and do it in-person, or you can do it by mail, see below.

To vote absentee in-person:

  • Before visiting your local registrar's office, you may check your registration status online at the State Board of Elections website or call our office at (804)966-9699
  • If you are not already registered, you will have to wait five days after registration before you can be issued an absentee ballot (exception for military and overseas voters only). If you have a Virginia DMV license or ID card, you can register online at the State Board of Elections website.
  • Within 45 days prior to the election in which you wish to vote, visit your local registrar's office to vote absentee in-person.
  • At the registrar's office, fill out an Absentee Application. You must show an acceptable form of ID. To view a complete list of acceptable IDs, please visit the “Voting In-Person page” on the state Board website.
  • After completing the application, you will be allowed to vote absentee in-person on a mark sense optical scan ballot which will be provided to you by our office. Accessible equipment and/or curbside voting is available upon request.

Voting absentee by mail:

  • Request an Absentee Application from your local registrar. These are also available at both Victory Centers in New Kent County (see related article on this web site)
  • Return the completed form to your local registrar's office.
  • After the registrar processes your application, you will receive your ballot in the mail.
  • Carefully review the instructions to complete and return your ballot to your local registrar by 7:00 pm on Election Day.
