Martha Dandridge Custis
Washington - First First Lady of the United States


Martha
Dandridge was born on June 2, 1731 at Chestnut Grove in New Kent County, where
she lived until her marriage to wealthy Daniel Parke Custis at age 18. The
marriage took place at St. Peter's Church. She and her husband lived at
White House until his death in 1757. She married George Washington in 1759
in New Kent County, and followed him to the battlefield and the
Presidency. Martha Dandridge Custis Washington died on May 22, 1802.
