NEW KENT ROAD MAP NEW KENT TOPOGRAPHICAL MAP The area was already important to the local Indian culture, when it was first visited by Captain John Smith in 1607, the same year that his party of Englishmen arrived at Jamestown. European settlement of New Kent began in the mid 1600's. History of New Kent County Government: New Kent County has a 5 member Board of Supervisors and 5 member School Board elected for 4 year terms by district. Other County officials elected County-wide are the Sheriff, Commissioner of Revenue, Commonwealth Attorney, Treasurer and Clerk of the Circuit Court. The Board of Supervisors meets each second Monday at 6:00pm in the Administration Building at New Kent Courthouse on Rt. 249 (New Kent Highway) New Kent Government Page. Schools: Students attend 4 schools: New Kent Elementary School (K-5), George W. Watkins Elementary School (K-5), New Kent Middle School (6-8), and New Kent High School (9-12). All 4 have received passing scores on Virginia's Standards of Learning tests and are all fully accredited by the State . New Kent Schools Page. Newspapers: The bi-weekly *New Kent Charles City Chronicle* covers both New Kent and Charles City Counties, and can be picked up free at various locations. The weekly *Tidewater Review* is published in West Point and covers several counties. The *Richmond Times Dispatch* and the Newport News *Daily Press* are daily papers published in neighboring cities. Recreation: Horse Racing: Colonial Downs Race Track provides the only licensed track in Virginia for live pari-mutuel horse racing. Golf: Royal New Kent Golf Course, Brookwoods Golf Club and Brickshire Golf Course are located in New Kent County, with others planned and numerous courses in nearby Williamsburg and Richmond. A new course is being built at New Kent Vineyards. Sports Car Racing: Dragonsridge Motor Sports Park is in the process of developing a 2.8 mile sports car track in the eastern part of the County. New Kent County Parks and Recreation Library: The Heritage Public Library in Providence Forge serves both New Kent And Charles City Counties. Utilities: Electricity: Dominion Virginia Power Telephone: Verizon and Cox Cable. New Kent is in the Richmond and Williamsburg local calling area. Cell Phone: Various companies. Most of the County is covered. Natural Gas: Virginia Natural Gas Propone: Revere Gas and Appliances Cable TV: Cox Cable High Speed Internet: Cox Cable and Verizon Water: County or private water systems or private wells. Public Waste Water Treatment: available in Brickshire, and other areas near Colonial Downs Race Track, and on Rt. 33. A current construction project will make waste water treatment available at each of the County's 4 interstate exits. Also private septic systems. Solid Waste Disposal: New Kent has 4 trash transfer stations in the County. Private trash pick up service is also available. Tax Rates Transportation: Interstate Route 64, State Route 60, and Route 249 run east and west through the County. Interstate 295 passes north/south within 3 miles and connects the County with I-95 and I-85. State Route 33 connects the County with West Point, Middle Peninsula and Northern Neck, and State Route 106 leads south across the James River to Hopewell and Petersburg. Bay Transit bus service for New Kent and Charles City starts on October 3, 2005. 6 am to 6 pm. Curb-to-Curb service for all NK and CC residents. Fares are $1 each way anywhere in Charles City or New Kent. Slightly higher for trips to Richmond or Williamsburg. Call 966-7650 in advance to schedule a ride. Air Travel: Five miles west of New Kent County along I-64 and Rt. 60 is Richmond International Airport, providing passenger and freight service.
